Application:
3142U051 is a hydraulic (self-adjusting) valve tappet used on the 4-cylinder Perkins 1104C-E60TAG4, 1104D-E44T/TA and 6-cylinder 1106C-E60TAG/TA engines; it is also specified for Caterpillar C6.6 and C7.1 builds. Typical installations include JCB 3CX/4CX back-hoe loaders, CAT 320D2 excavators, 100 kVA “Vista A” generator sets, CLAAS Lexion combines and MF 5400-series tractors. The tappet locates between the camshaft lobe and the push-rod, maintaining zero valve lash throughout the 12 000 h overhaul interval at engine speeds up to 2 200 min⁻¹.

Overall length 30 mm, head diameter 22 mm, stem diameter 12 mm, cam-contact face radius 600 mm, mass 168 g. Body is drop-forged from 20CrMo steel (0.20 % C, 1 % Cr, 0.20 % Mo), through-hardened to 58 HRC at the crown and 45 HRC on the stem to resist brinelling under 12 kN spring load. Crown surface is phosphate-coated 5 µm to assist initial running-in, then flash-oiled for corrosion-free storage.
Material & performance features:
The 20CrMo alloy offers 900 MPa tensile strength and 12 % elongation, resisting impact fatigue when the cam lifts 9 mm at 30 g acceleration. Induction-hardened crown depth is 2.0 mm, delaying pitting beyond 8 000 h even when sulphated ash fuel is used.
